Electric heaters for industrial applications

Electric heaters offer high reliability and low maintenance heat source for various industrial applications. Electric process heaters are commonly used in the oil & gas production and natural gas transmission pipeline. They are also used in power generation, renewable energy, and the petrochemical sector.

A recent development in the process heating industry is the use of electric heaters. They are replacing gas-fired heaters in the electrification and decarbonization effort. Compared to a gas-fired heater, an electric heaters offer faster response, unsurpassed reliability with extremely low maintenance. It has no emission and is beneficial for locations that requires air quality permits. The installation and maintenance of an electric process heater is simpler. It does not have open flame, fire tubes, or boilers. Electric heaters also offer lower capital investment compared to fired equipment.

Electric process heater are commonly use as a line heater in oil and gas production. Electric process heater are used to raise the temperature of crude oil. They increase the temperature of the oil and water mixture. This aids in phase separation in oil & gas production. The heater bundle are also found in separators and kettle style electric heater as a reboiler. In the reboiler, the electric heater raises the mixture to vaporize the lighter components.

Electric process heaters are use to heat natural gas in gas transmission pipeline to prevent freezing during pressure reduction. During a pressure reduction, the gas will become very cold due to the Joule Thomson effect. The compact size of the electric process heater is advantageous. Its precise temperature control makes it a superior method for heating natural gas. It is common to have temperature regulation of +- 1 deg F. The power generation industry uses electric heater to heat the fuel gas. Electric fuel gas heater provides the necessary super heat to prevent condensation of the natural gas. The conservative method is them to raise the gas temperature 50 deg F from it supply temperature.

The renewable energy commonly uses an electric heater as a means to store energy. The electric heater will heat up an intermediate product where the heat is stored and recovered at a later time.

Petrochemical industry commonly uses electric heater to heat up specific process and in regeneration service. Electric process heaters are package with pump, expansion tank to form a source of heat in a hot oil unit. They are called hot oil units. The hot oil units raises the temperature of heat transfer fluid to the proper usage temperature. In regeneration service, an electric process heater will heat up process gas. Gas such as nitrogen is used in the regeneration of molecular sieve beds.
