Electric immersion heater are heater bundle that are installed in tanks or vessel. Generally the is little to no flow across the heater bundle. The heater transfer are predominantly thru conduction and convection. Some common application includes tank heater, knock out drum electric heater, water bath electric heater, and heaters in molten salt application.

Electric process heater are typically an electric immersion heater installed in a vessel. Process is then flowed thru the electric heater assembly. The heater would then heat up the process in a single or multi pass. Some common application includes Nitrogen Regeneration Heater in refinery, Fuel Gas Heater in power generation, Electric line heater in oil & gas heater and Electric Natural Gas pre heater in pressure reduction station.

Shell & Tube exchangers are very similar in construction to an electric heater. In fact some shell & tube exchangers looks very similar to an electric heater. Their similarity quickly diminish from here on. Shell & Tube exchangers have hollow tubes with process flowing on the inside and outside of the tubes. On an electric heater, the tubes are filled ( refer to our Technical section for more details) Electric heater is an active device, any once of power must be absorbed by the process of it will over heat. On the other hand, a Shell & Tube exchangers depend on thermal gradient of the tubes for heat transfer. We commonly see a misapplication of Tema Standards for an electric heater.
