Understanding the Electric Immersion Heater
An electric immersion heater consists of a specialized heater bundle installed directly into tanks or pressure vessels. In these specific applications, there is typically very little flow across the heater bundle itself. Consequently, heat transfer occurs predominantly through natural conduction and convection.
Because this equipment has a lower heat transfer coefficient, engineers must carefully select an appropriate heat flux for each project. Selecting the correct heat flux keeps the bundle’s operating temperature within an acceptable, safe range. We typically see heat flux ratings ranging from 10 to 30 watts per square inch in these setups.
Common Applications for Immersion Technology
You will frequently find an electric immersion heater installed to raise the temperature of liquid in caustic tanks and bath heaters. In petrochemical complexes, these heaters are essential for vaporizing liquids within knock-out drums before they reach the flare tower. This method prevents liquids from reaching the flare, protecting the environment and equipment.
Similar technology is used in vaporizer systems that require lower heat flux for immersion service. If the system involves active flow, we can safely increase the unit’s heat flux.
